Depression, stress, bad moods, or even addictions; as recent as 2017, one in five struggled with serious psychological issues. Now, nearly one in two people has problems. However, only a fraction seek professional help due to financial issues or doubts about its efficacy. Psychological expert Petr Šobra commented, "Self-reflection often develops later in life."
People are reluctant to ask for help. Many say that they are aware of others struggling with issues, and note a change in students—becoming emotionally numb. Last year, nearly 70,000 children received treatment for mental health issues, which is a third more than a decade ago. Dr. Jan Lebl noted that the patient spectrum is changing, with teenagers intentionally overdosing on medication.
Younger adults around age 20 also face challenges, including climate grief which refers to anxiety about the world's future. Psychologist Lucie Jandová explained that they fear the world is becoming less familiar and stable than when they were growing up. Women's depression rates are rising, particularly during and post-pregnancy. A practical physician noted, if a mother is depressed during pregnancy, cortisol can pass to the fetus, affecting emotional regulation.
When people with mental health concerns seek help, they often choose the wrong specialist. Many can remedy early mood issues with simple lifestyle changes. According to Pavel Doubek, a psychiatrist, maintaining a stable routine is vital for mood stability. Sleep is also crucial—going to bed and waking up at the same time is advisable.
